SPECT

Nuclear & X-ray · reads

Brain SPECT is nuclear-medicine tomography that images the 3D distribution of an injected radiopharmaceutical. With 99mTc-HMPAO or ECD, it measures retained regional tracer uptake fixed soon after injection, which reflects cerebral perfusion at that time. It estimates relative regional blood flow from count-density ratios and does not give absolute flow.

Prerequisites
contrast agent: IV injection of a 99mTc-labeled radiotracer (HMPAO or ECD, 555-1110 MBq typical adult activity) via a cannula placed 10-15 minutes beforehand.; other: Patient rests in a quiet, dimly lit room and must be able to remain still for 30-60 minutes during acquisition.
