Responsive neurostimulation (RNS) is a closed-loop device implanted in the skull, with leads placed deep in the brain and/or as strips on its surface, each lead having four contacts. It records electrical brain activity from inside the skull (ECoG) between neighboring contacts, storing brief recordings and counts of when and where patient-specific seizure-like activity was detected. On detecting that activity, it delivers electrical stimulation to brain tissue at the seizure focus, hippocampal or neocortical depending on lead placement.
NeuroPace RNS is a cranially implanted closed-loop system for epilepsy. It continuously senses intracranial ECoG through depth and/or subdural cortical strip leads placed at identified seizure foci, each lead carrying four sensing and stimulating contacts. When it detects programmed, patient-specific epileptiform activity, it delivers brief electrical pulses to the brain tissue at the seizure focus to disrupt that activity before a seizure develops. It also works as a chronic ambulatory ECoG recorder, storing brief recordings and time and location detection counts for review.
