Magnetogenetics aims to control cellular activity by coupling magnetic proteins to ion channels. Ferritin-channel designs propose that an applied magnetic field supplies mechanical force or heating to alter membrane conductance; one implementation fuses ferritin to TRPV4. Their efficacy and mechanisms are contested: physical analysis finds the proposed ferritin mechanisms many orders of magnitude too weak, and an independent test found no magnetic-field-induced electrical changes in Magneto-expressing cerebellar Purkinje cells, despite reported calcium responses in another assay.
